According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the tummy tuck procedure was performed over 148,000 times in 2007. As a result, and not surprisingly, one of the most frequently asked questions concerning this procedure is “How much does a tummy tuck cost”? Especially nowadays, money is on the forefront of everyone’s minds.

Before we can answer that question, there are numerous variables to consider. As such, it is practically impossible to give a finite answer on the cost of tummy tucks. In order to receive the definitive answer, a person considering a tummy tuck should schedule a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon.

You may be asking at this point, what are the other variables that come into play when it comes to determining how much does a tummy tuck cost.

One factor that plays a role is the extent of tummy tuck surgery you are undergoing. There are actually three main tummy tuck procedures: mini tummy tuck, traditional tummy tuck, and the extended tummy tuck.

Just like it sounds, the mini tummy tuck is the smaller version (this is where the surgeon does not operate above your navel). As you can imagine, a mini tummy tuck cost will be much less than a traditional tummy tuck cost. Additionally, the cost of mini tummy tuck will be less that the cost of an extended tummy tuck.

At this point another issue that should be brought up is tummy tuck financing. Since this is usually considered an elective surgery procedure, where the insurance company will not pay for it, many surgeon offices actually have financing plans available. When you attend your consultation, this may be a good subject to address with the surgeon.

Now that we have addressed all of these points, we can readdress the question of “How much does a tummy tuck cost?” The average cost tummy tuck ranges between $5,000 and $10,000. While this range may seem like a ballpark estimate, the fact is that there are simply too many variable to give a better answer. To get a more accurate estimate, the Tummy Tuck Cost Guide recommends you schedule a consultation today.

When people first consider getting a mini (or as it is often called, a scarless or partial) tummy tuck, the one question that invariably comes up is “What is the cost of mini tummy tuck going to be?” Since we have already discussed the average cost of tummy tuck, we felt it would be valuable to address this question as well.

Fortunately, the mini tummy tuck is a smaller version of the traditional tummy tuck. This is fortunate because the overall price tag is smaller.

The main difference between these two procedures is the fact that during the mini tummy tuck, only the abdominal area below the navel is operated on. During a traditional tummy tuck, the entire abdominal area is operated on.

As stated above, due to numerous reasons, the mini tummy tuck cost will be lower than a traditional tummy tuck.

First, since less of your abdominal area is being operated on, you require less of the tummy tuck surgeon’s time. As you can imagine, the cost of the surgeon constitutes the majority of the fee structure.

Second, besides needing less of the surgeon’s time, you will spend less time in the operating facility. Since these facilities generally charge based on an hourly basis, you will save some money (as compared to the traditional procedure). Just to give you an idea of how much of a difference it is between the two procedures, it normally takes between 1 and 3 hours for the partial tummy tuck and 4 to 6 hours for the traditional method.

Third, since this procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis (since it is significantly less invasive than the traditional procedure), you are not required to stay overnight in the hospital.

When you compare the mini tummy tuck cost with that of the traditional procedure, we think you will agree that it is better to have a scarless tummy tuck if possible. However, please listen to the advice of your surgeon, as he or she will know what the best course of action will be.

While there are numerous factors that influence the cost for tummy tuck, the largest cost is usually the surgeon’s fee structure. As such, we are sure that you are interested in how this fee structure is established. Therefore, we are going to show you how a tummy tuck surgeon decides how much to charge.

Generally speaking, the surgeon’s cost will be based on four main factors: education, experience, skill level, and geographical location. These factors will determine if you receive a low cost, high cost, or average cost tummy tuck.

First, let’s discuss the doctor’s geographical location. The surgeon’s fees will obviously be higher if he or she works in a high cost of living area than a low cost of living area. For a comparison, you are going to pay more for a tummy tuck in Beverly Hills than you will for a tummy tuck in lower Louisiana.

The second factor that we can discuss is the doctor’s education. Depending on where the doctor received his or her schooling, he will have to set his rates at a high enough level to repay his student loans while maintaining an acceptable standard of living.

Additionally, you will pay more for a surgeon that went to a prestigious medical school than you would for a doctor who attended a medical school in Grenada.

The third factor that affects the fee structure is the doctor’s experience. You will pay more for a surgeon who has been practicing cosmetic surgery for 16 years than you will for a surgeon with 2 years of experience. Therefore, if you are looking for a low cost tummy tuck, you may want to consider a less experienced tummy tuck surgeon.

The last factor that affects how much the surgeon’s fees are is his skill level. Believe it or not, there really is a huge gap in the ability of different surgeons. This becomes readily apparent when you view a surgeon’s website.

As we have shown above, the factors of geographical location, experience, skill level, and education all play a major role in determining how much tummy tucks cost. Before we end this discussion, we want to point out that you will get what you pay for when it comes to getting a tummy tuck. In the long run, you will feel much better if you pay a little more for an experienced surgeon than if you pay a little less for a less inexperienced surgeon.

Before we can begin a discussion on the tummy tuck cost, it would be useful to quickly provide a brief overview of the procedure. A tummy tuck is a medical procedure which tightens up the patient’s abdominal wall muscles while removing excess skin.

Unfortunately, many insurance companies classify this procedure as an elective surgery procedure. Since most patients have to pay out of their own pockets, the cost of a tummy tuck becomes a significant issue. Obviously, if you need to have this surgery and you can’t get it classified as medically necessary, you are going to have to worry about the tummy tuck costs.

As you can imagine, the majority of tummy tuck patients are women. With the increased emphasis on women maintaining their pre-pregnancy figures, more and more women are undergoing this procedure. With that said, men are more often getting tummy tucks nowadays (usually due to a large weight loss).

At this point it is definitely worth noting that a tummy tuck should not be used as a weight loss technique. If a patient is able to remove the weight via nutrition and exercise, they should do so. This is for 2 reasons. First, losing weigh naturally is significantly better for you than undergoing surgery. Second, the cost of tummy tuck surgery can be astronomical when all of the factors are included.

Additionally, the whole intent of this surgery is to remove the excess skin. Using a tummy tuck for any other reason simply doesn’t make medical sense.

With that said, a question that often comes up is “How do I know if I can get rid of the excess skin without tummy tuck surgery?” Believe it or not, sometimes, you skin will return to its “pre-stretched” form.

If you skin doesn’t retract back to its normal size within a 6 month time period, most likely, it is not going to return back to normal. Hence, you should wait at least this long after a pregnancy or large weight loss before proceeding with a tummy tuck.

A word of caution is due at this point: if you are a woman and plan on having more children, you should wait until you have had your last child before you get this procedure. The cost for a tummy tuck is just too high to do otherwise.
